Many massage/bodywork sessions will have a mix of these techniques.  Here is a list of several of the techniques I know and practice.

 

 

Neuromuscular Reprogramming Therapy:  Therapeutic Bodywork

 

 

Neuromuscular Reprogramming is a hands on bodywork modality that uses manual muscle testing to assess and correct coordination dysfunction.  In other words, it’s a way of looking for the compensations of the body so that it works efficiently and therefore you  don’t experience pain.   It works with the body organizational  intelligence to reprogram  the patterns that we have stored in our brain that are in charge of our coordinated movement.  It was created by Jocelyn Olivier.

It’s particularly good for pain and extreme tightness, when you know your body is not working  in symmetry.  But if there is no pain, but one shoulder is higher than the other, your right leg works much harder than the left or your right hip is a bit higher, this technique will allow the client and the therapist to find the reason for the unbalance.  It works on the structure of the body. 

 

 

 

Neurokinetic therapy: Therapeutic bodywork

The NeuroKinetic Therapy™ corrective movement system protocol employing a system of precise muscle tests has the ability to change the programming of the Motor Control Center (MCC) in the cerebellum. The MCC coordinates all movement patterns in the body. It learns through failure and from activating muscles that were not engaged before.

(This technique is somewhat similar to Neuromuscular Reprogramming as it stems from David Weinstock who collaborated with Jocelyn Olivier for many years when they worked together in California.)

 

 

 

 

Deep tissue therapy: Therapeutic/Relaxation bodywork

Deep tissue massage is a type of massage aimed at the deeper tissue structures of the muscle and fascia, also called connective tissue. Deep tissue massage uses many of the same movements and techniques as Swedish massage, but the pressure will generally be more intense. It is also a more focused type of massage, as the therapist works to release chronic muscle tension or knots (also known as “adhesions.”)

Deep tissue may incorporate other techniques to achieve a deeper relief like hot stones and cupping therapy, which allow great depth into the muscle and are virtually painless.

 

 

Reiki: Relaxation/Balancing bodywork

Reiki is a very gentle, non-invasive form of “energy work.” The development of Reiki is attributed to a Japanese Buddhist named Mikai Usui (1865-1926). Reiki is based on the idea that there is life force energy that can be encouraged to flow.   The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words. Rei means “God’s Wisdom ” and Ki (known as “Chi” is Chinese) is “life force energy.”

What Does a Reiki Session Feel Like?

You begin by laying down, fully clothed, with relaxing music in the background. The Reiki practitioner will gently rest their hands on you in a series of positions, from the crown of the head to the feet. The Reiki practitioner holds the position for several minutes, then moves to the next position. A good Reiki session should be deeply relaxing and leave you feeling calmer and more balanced.

 

 

 

Medical & Neuromuscular Massage: Therapeutic bodywork

Medical Massage is usually defined as medically necessary therapy bed by a referring physician for a diagnosed medical condition. Medical massage is helpful to individuals who suffer from an assortment of health conditions, including repetitive motion injuries, Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, chronic headaches, crick in the neck’, whiplash, rotator cuff injuries, computer usage, TMJ dysfunction, etc.Neuromuscular Massage Therapy is the use of static pressure on specific myofascial points to relieve pain. This technique manipulates the soft tissue of the body (muscles, tendons and connective tissue) to balance the central nervous system.In a healthy individual, nerves transmit impulses (which are responsible for every movement, function and thought) to the body very slowly. Injury, trauma, postural distortion or stress cause nerves to speed up their transmission, inhibiting equilibrium and making the body vulnerable to pain and dysfunction. Neuromuscular therapy will address:

  1. Ischemic areas – a lack of blood supply to soft tissues which causes hypersensitivity to touch
  2. Trigger points – are accumulations of waste products around a nerve receptor. Often times they feel like nodules or taut bands of fibers within the soft tissues. Trigger points form in muscles which have been overused or injured due to an accident or surgery and are characterized by increased muscle tension and muscle shortening. Trigger points can present as sharp pain, dull ache, tingling, pins and needles, hot or cold, as well as can create symptoms such as nausea, ear ache, equilibrium disturbance, or blurred vision.
  3. Nerve Compression or Entrapment – Pressure on a nerve by soft tissue, cartilage or bone
  4. Postural Distortion – Imbalance of the muscular system resulting from the movement of the body off the longitudinal and horizontal planes
  5. Bio-mechanical Dysfunction – Imbalance of the musculoskeletal system resulting in faulty movement patterns (i.e., poor lifting habits, bad mechanics in a golf swing of tennis stroke, computer keyboarding)

Note: Medical massage can often be billed directly to Insurance companies: $35 per 15 minutes.

 

The Rossiter workouts: Therapeutic bodywork

The Rossiter System eases, relieves and prevents pain because it directly tackles the causes of pain. Tightness, pain, throbbing, aching and limited movement in muscles and joints occur because surrounding connective tissue has shortened and tightened from overuse and repetition. The Rossiter System’s stretching techniques loosen entire areas of connective tissue, restore mobility and circulation. The result — effective pain relief and free movement.

Swedish Massage: Relaxation bodywork

Traditional Swedish massage uses a variety of techniques specifically designed to relax muscles by applying pressure to them against deeper muscles and bones.

It uses a firm but gentle pressure to improve the circulation, ease muscle aches and tension, improve flexibility and create relaxation.  The therapist uses massage oil or gel to facilitate making long, smooth strokes over the body. Swedish massage employs five different movements: long, gliding strokes, kneading of individual muscles,  friction or tapping and vibration.

 

 

 

Cupping therapy: Therapeutic bodywork

A modern adaptation of the ancient Chinese art where suction and negative pressure is used to drain fluids and toxins, loosen adhesions by lifting connective tissue, bring blood to stagnant areas, etc.  Very deep and effective technique that is painless and deeply relaxing.

Cupping is a treatment that will not exacerbate your muscle pain because it pulls on the tissue creating space.

It is especially good for:

  • Reducing trigger points and hypersensitive areas
  • increasing muscle flexibility and range of motion
  • decreasing anxiety and depression

(After your cupping treatment you may notice some red marks in the form of circles on your skin.  Don’t worry – this is a sign that the cupping technique has worked to increase your circulation. You will also feel deeply relaxed and the areas that have been treated will feel flexible and light.)

 

 

Healing Stones Massage: Relaxation bodywork

Healing Stone Massage – A powerful unique therapy that works in harmony with various massage techniques and water-heated basalt stones of varying sizes to relax your body to its deepest level. The direct heat relaxes the muscles, allowing for a greater intensity manipulation of the tissues than with regular massage. The healing stone experience relieves pain, promotes harmony, balance and peace.

In cases of muscular injury and inflammation, frozen, cooling marble stones are used. This creates a type of thermo-therapeutic ‘vascular gymnastics’ in the circulatory system to help the body detoxify and heal.

  • The warmer stones expand the blood vessels, pushing blood and unwanted waste materials through the body. This has a sedative effect on the nervous system.
  • The cold stones cause the blood vessels to constrict, stimulating the nervous system and drawing blood and waste products along the body.

Full body Healing Stones is a massage where the client lays on warmed stones and the top of the body is massage with healing stones, then the client turns and receives similar treatment on the back of the body.

Aromatherapy: Therapeutic/Relaxation bodywork

Aromatherapy uses essential oils from plants to heal, alleviate pain and regulate mood. Essential oils are a volatile, highly concentrated plant extracts, derived from leaves, bark, roots, seeds resins and flowers.

In aromatherapy massage, essential oils are usually mixed with a carrier oil like sweet almond, apricot kernel, or grapeseed oil. The therapist use up to five oils in a mixture, and chooses the oils based on what you need. A relaxing aromatherapy massage, for instance, might have lavender or bergamot, while a massage for sore muscles might include peppermint and eucalyptus.

Chair Massage: Therapeutic/Relaxation bodywork

Short (15-20 minutes) massage of a client sitting in a special, portable massage chair. The client remains fully clothed and no oils are used while their shoulders, neck, upper back, head and arms are massaged. The On-Site option is popular at some offices as an employee benefit and for some conferences, workshops and certain social events.

In a study done at the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami, researchers found that when participants got a fifteen-minute chair massage just twice a week, their anxiety levels were lower, their brain waves proved they were more relaxed and alert, and their stress levels were measurably reduced. The study also showed improved speed and accuracy on math computations.

Integrative Reflexology: Therapeutic/Relaxation bodywork

The general theory of Reflexology is based on the idea that all parts of the body, including the organs and glands, have a corresponding reflexive point located within the area of the feet.  With the proper application of pressure to these specific points, the release of blockages to the corresponding areas of the body can be attained.  This can help achieve better harmony and balance along with a deep feeling of relaxation. 

There are also reflex points within the hands and ears. Sessions can be customized to add these points into the treatment.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Movement Therapy: Therapeutic/Relaxation bodywork

 

Movement Therapy, a technique created by Lynda Clay (Director and Founder of the Therapeutic Massage Training Institute), is loosely based on the Trager Approach.  Movement Therapy utilizes gentle, non-intrusive, natural movements and joint mobilizations to help release deep-seated physical and mental patterns.  Such patterns may have developed in response to accidents, illnesses, or any kind of physical or emotional trauma, including the stress of everyday life. Movement Therapy facilitates deep relaxation, an increase in physical mobility, and mental clarity. The therapist moves the client in natural ways using a quality of touch and movement so that the recipient experiences a feeling of moving that is effortless and freeing.

The movements are never forced so there is no induced pain or discomfort to the client.

These procedures can be done while the client remains fully clothed or while draped as in a traditional massage session.  This technique has a tendency to take the brainwaves into Theta waves, also called the creative wave.  Such brainwaves correlate to healing and an integration of mind and body.

 

Massage Class for Two

 

You can now take a Massage Class for Two and learn methods to massage somebody without getting exhausted yourself.

Come to Bliss Therapeutic Massage with your spouse/partner/friend and learn how to relieve each other’s stress.  Come discover the correct methods to relax the body and get better sleep.  Learn how to find those stubborn points of achiness and pain and get rid of them.  I will demonstrate the best way of applying pressure or work on a knot and the person receiving it can give feedback to the giver comparing the way it feels.

Understand how to manage your daily stress while getting closer to each other.

This class will be customized to your desires and needs.  You decide if you would like relaxation therapy, relief for your achy shoulders or help for those leg muscles after a long run or a long day at the office.

There are two options, a 60 minutes class (approximately 30 minutes of practice per person), priced at $100 and another for 90 minutes (approximately 45 minutes per person), at $140.
